Description
This is the trade pack of ten Sutton D220 XP Bullet jobber drills at 3.0mm, the size most people reach for when they want a pilot hole that a larger bit or a screw will follow cleanly. Buying ten at once is about not stopping work to drive to the hardware shop.
Each bit is pressed from high speed steel with an extreme parabolic flute and a precision split point. Everything about the grind is aimed at cutting fast and clearing swarf, which is exactly what you want when the same pilot hole is being drilled hundreds of times.
Why 3.0mm and why a ten pack
3.0mm is a pilot size. It is small enough to steer a larger bit, large enough not to snap under normal hand pressure, and it is the standard pilot for a wide range of wood screws and for starting holes that a 5mm or 6mm bit will finish.
It is also the size that disappears fastest. Small bits get used for one-off jobs, borrowed and not returned, and broken by accident. A ten pack keeps the job moving and costs less per bit than ten carded singles.

Frequently asked questions
Why buy ten small bits instead of one?
Cost per bit is lower, and small drills are the ones that break. A 3.0mm bit snapping mid job is a nuisance at the best of times and a real problem if the hole is already half drilled. Keeping spares in the box removes the excuse to keep using a blunt one.
What size hole does a 3.0mm bit make?
A 3.0mm hole, which is a clearance fit for M2.5 fasteners and a pilot for larger bits. If you need a tapping size for M3.5, go up to 2.9mm, and for M4 use 3.3mm.
Is this the same bit as the carded 5.0mm XP Bullet?
Same range and same grind, smaller size, and supplied as a tradepack of ten rather than a single carded bit. If you only need one, the 5.0mm carded XP Bullet is the single bit option.
Will these break easily?
Small drills break when they are pushed sideways or run at high speed with no support. Used straight, in a chuck that holds them true, at moderate speed, a 3.0mm bit lasts well. A centre punch dimple before you start makes a real difference at this size.
Can I use them in a drill press?
Yes, and this is where they perform best. A drill press holds the bit perfectly straight and gives consistent feed pressure, which is exactly what small bits need. They are also fine in a hand drill or a cordless.
Need to finish the job
For larger holes in the same material, step up to the 5.0mm XP Bullet trade pack or the 6.5mm trade pack. Both are the same range and the same grind, so they behave identically as you go up in size.
We supply the full XP Bullet range, in carded singles and trade packs like this one, with delivery Australia wide and pickup from our Truganina trade counter.
